What treatment can help a person of average age moderate "collapse" of the shoulders, upper back and neck?
I knocks at the fifty, and it becomes a real problem for me. I did not realize how pronounced my stooped appearance was until I saw myself standing on the side in a recent photo. But I have considerable pain in my back, neck and shoulders, especially when I wake up. Not only do I have numbness and radiating pain in my arms, but also feel my breathing is very doubtful in many positions. It's like I have almost no neck more! For a few years, I realized that even if I concentrate on my posture, it is difficult and hard to sit up straight. As a teenager, I was screened and told my scoliosis is mild enough not to require intervention, but now I almost wish I had undergone surgery at the time. What are my options now? I do not know if I see chiropractor, orthopedic specialist, physical therapist, or what!
Physiotherapy is good, because they can teach you to stretch neck, upper back and muscles and anterior chest. They can also help you strengthen your upper back muscles to hold your new posture. Stretching the tight muscles involved will help alleviate the numbness in the arms and give your chest more room to expand during breathing. Hope this helps.
